Terrified of public speaking? Start with what you really want to say. (Louise Tickle)
Louise Tickle, a
freelance journalist, starts an article with a story about an invitation that
had dropped into her inbox. She was asked to give a lecture to the charity
Family Rights Group. After receiving that, she was worried about not only
writing a mini-dissertation, but also the confidence in her voice. Despite the
fact that Louise used to have different talks with other people as a journalist,
she was sure that her voice sounds a bit thin and high, even a bit girly.
Suddenly, she discovered that this problem is
not unique. In history of world broadcasting, there has been lots of prejudice
about women’s voices. For example, in UK women weren’t allowed to read
television news on national programmes until 1975. According to the Daily
Express and the Sunday Dispatch, women’s voices don’t have enough strength in
their voices to articulate their opinions. Even if women could give public
speaking they were under pressure because their voices were too tough.
To solve the fear of public speaking, Louise
decided to take a couple of exercises to improve her voice and be more
confident in herself. In her opinion, journalists’ job is not to talk about
themselves, but to report the stories of the others, and so she wasn’t sure
that she has the authority to speak. In addition, her coach explained to her
that for giving a good public speaking Louise have to improve not only the way
of speaking, but to use her own feelings to show the audience that she’s an
absolutely sure about the subject she is speaking about.
Things I would like to learn about:
Does the society
have the same opinion about women’s voices on TV programmes?
What exercises can
help to make voice stronger?
Should the
journalists be more opened with their readers?
