Advantages and disadvantages of legalizing marijuana

In the last few years, the problem of legalizing marijuana, or cannabis, is frequently discussed around the world. There are different opinions concerning this problem. Some people consider that legalizing cannabis will not bring bad results. But, there are also people who are sure that it should be banned in case to not to harm people’s health.

As for the advantages of legalizing cannabis, firstly, it is a good treatment for avoiding illnesses. A lot of patients are able to use marijuana as an effective method of treatment for their ailments. This is possible in the USA because fourteen state governments across the country have acknowledged cannabis’ effective healing properties and legalized its consumption for medicinal purposes with the consent of a licensed physician. Secondly, legalization of marijuana would produce is the reintegration of hemp into the society, and more importantly in current times, the economy. Statistics in the United States suggest legalizing marijuana would make the country about $18 billion better of every year. The gains would come from tax revenues on pot sales and savings to the justice system – including the cost of keeping smokers in jail. Finally, legalizing cannabis would take the trade out of the hands of criminal gangs. Legalized, it could be properly regulated to ensure quality and safety – just like any other product.

However, some people suppose that cannabis must be prohibited because, at first, it can also have bad consequences. It is may be bad for your brain, lungs and heart. Pot smokers also run higher risks of developing mental health problems like schizophrenia and depression. Secondly, cannabis is highly addictive. Studies show up to one-in 10 users develop dependence over time. Stopping marijuana use can lead to withdrawal symptoms like anxiety and irritability. Finally, legalizing cannabis will not stop the drug gangs. They will see profits boosted as it leads to more users and more addicts. Just look at Amsterdam where the liberal pot culture has spawned social problems from muggings to prostitution and hard drug use. Research shows that heavy pot-smokers are several times more likely than non-users to commit violent crime.

In conclusion, I should say that there are different opinions concerning the problem of legalizing marijuana. But, I am in full agreement with the statement that it should be legalized despite the disadvantages.
